The brain is a funny thing. It requires constant stimulation and exercise to operate at its peak level. New experiences require it to work. New tastes, new smells, new sights, but those are often an expensive form of brain training. One cannot always fly off to another country at the drop of a hat or go to the latest source of haute cuisine. One thing the average person can do is learn or read. From childhood people are told to ,”Never stop learning. Is this new to you? Catch up here” With the internet, there is a wealth of information available for free. Anything of interest can be thoroughly researched from the comfort of a couch.

Learn something new everyday, whether that is a new word or how to trade stocks. It is important to apply yourself to expanding your knowledge every day. It is the single most important ingredient in the healthy brain cocktail. All the vitamin supplements in the world will not replace actively using your brain on a daily basis. Learning and applying new ideas and concepts get those synapses firing and form new paths, not to mention making you a more interesting person. Pick a and interesting topic and apply yourself to learning all you can about it.

Learning a foreign language can be a very great way to develop the mind. And I should know; for I have not only been studying languages since I was a child” first by French classes in elementary school in Canada and later majoring in Spanish (and taking French and German also) in college, but I have studied a number of languages on my own. Let me describe two ways in which that is so.

Languages are made up of patterns that can easily be laid out in tables. This is more true for many other languages than it is for English, and learning the paradigms is a way to exercise the mind.Never heard of this before? Get up to speed here. But it is not enough to memorize inflection lists. One also must get used to actively using the forms in sentences and identifying them when they occur.

Much of the world’s greatest literature, including the Bible itself, was written in languages other than English. And much of what they said is lost in translation. A good exercise is to try and memorize a passage from such a prominent text in the original. I have done that with a number of texts; I now know Psalm 24 by heart!

Reading builds brain muscle. The brain cells, known as neurons, have the ability to make new connections. This neuropacity allows you to learn.Reading can help in developing new connections and strengthen the brain.According to studies, brain images done on children showed ,with instruction, poor readers could improve. The images showed changes where new connections were formed.Older adults can stimulate their rain by reading. Daily activities that include reading, such as crossword puzzles, and using the computer help form new coinnections and strengthen the brain. Reading, unlike watching teleivision,is a particapitory activity, where new connections are made, and leads to a strong brainStudies have shown that older adults who participated in a program where they helped children with reading had less memory loss than those who did not participate in this activity. Children who are too young to read independently can read with parents or an older sibling.Other activities, such as identifying letters and numbers help develop a strong brain. Some children feel more comfortable reading to the family pet, they have an attentive audience and do notneed to worry about making mistakes. Story times at the library or local bookstore are an excellent way to increase your childs interest in reading.Children are more willing to read if they are reading something they enjoy. Reading street signsor items at the grocery are fun ways to incoporate reading into every dayl ife.Parents or others can stengthen their brains and be an example by reading daily.Like the musces in the body the brain needs exercise Reading dailyi s the activity needed for a strong brain.

There are tons of TV shows on right now that keep the adult mind active and we’d like to tell you about a few of our favorites:
Wheel of Fortune: If word puzzles are your thing you’ve got to tune in to the classic dinner-time game show. It’s light and airy and if you solve the puzzle first you feel like a hero!
Cash Cab: This series is great for anyone trivia-obsessed and with questions ranging from business to history to food your mind is sure to get a workout from one destination to another.
The Killing: Murder mysteries like this are great for puzzle solving abilities…if you don’t have the time to watch a whole series catch an episode of CSI or Criminal Minds from the very beginning.
House Hunters: There’s something spatially challenging and psyco-theraputic about watching other people look at real estate. If you can guess which house they pick you can consider yourself well versed in how to read people.

There have been numerous studies that have confirmed that social interaction can help keep a person’s mind sharp. One study analyzed over 3,600 people from the ages of 24 to the age of 96 to verify that talking to just one person for only 10 minutes a day can help boost mental function. Talking to other people can keep the mind just as sharp as if the person was doing mental exercises.

So what does that mean for the average person? It means they should try to engage in healthy social interaction at least once a day.Is this new to you? Catch up here But that is just at the minimum, the more healthy social interaction that you engage in, the more mental benefits that you will receive from it.

This news can really be of use to seniors. Sometimes, as we age, loss of memory and other mental functions can happen. That is why some seniors do mental exercises to stay sharp. But instead of doing those mental exercises, they can simply take a walk in the park and engage in some healthy conversations and stay just as sharp.

It is often said that you must use it or lose it when it comes to certain things, this no doubt applies to the mind as well and social interaction makes you use your mind and keeps you sharp.

After your years of formal education are over, some people feel that they are done with the learning process. Whether you’ve just gotten your high school diploma and or have gone through graduate school, education never ends. Every day we learn something new, whether it’s from walking down the street, playing with our children or taking continuing education classes.

Many places offer some sort of continuing education courses for people of all ages and education ranges. Community education is an affordable way to keep learning. You can take classes in almost any subject. If you’ve always wanted to learn another language or learn new cooking skills, this is a great and affordable way to do it. The great thing about community education is costs less than most college classes.

Education doesn’t have to be expensive and it doesn’t always have to come in a formalized degree program. Enjoying community education will help you attain new skills, utilize the ones you have, all while keeping your mind active. Most classes are priced well below the price of a formal college class, but that doesn’t mean they quality is any lower. Most classes are taught by experts in their field. Keep on learning with community education!

We are always looking for new ways to stimulate ourselves whether it be through social interactions, reading, writing or traveling. The Brain is one of the most complex and most amazing gifts we have been given and it is important to keep it sharp and of course continually stimulate the brain. Studies have shown that travel is one such way to keep our brains stimulated and our minds sharp.

You probably have heard many times that you need to continually be learning and exposing yourself to new and exciting things to keep your mind sharp. You can find a quick rundown here What achieves that more than travel? Whether you are going to visit a new country, or even a new place nearby your brain is exposed to new sites and new educational opportunities. Scientists know early humans lived a relatively nomadic lifestyle and were constantly exposed to new sights. This allowed humans to learn new things, and evolve into the species that we are today. We can contrast this with the early Neanderthals who stayed close to home and have long since been extinct.

Consider the brain of an infant and how rapidly it develops at such a young age. Babies are constantly exposed to new sights and cultures which stimulates their brains. Travel can do the same for people at any age. The brain is ever changing and exposing it to new activities might be just what you need to keep it fine tuned!
